Researchers have developed a scalpel-free alternative to brain surgery that can help people with Parkinson’s disease. The new focused ultrasound could help those patients a lot whose uncontrolled symptoms couldn’t be helped much by medication.
In this technique, a small region in the brain is focused on ultrasound waves like a magnifying glass focuses light. This allows faulty tissue to get destroyed.
This procedure is monitored by the doctors using magnetic resonance imaging or MRI and necessary adjustments are made to obtain the best outcomes for the patients and to reduce tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease.
